We have identified core principles we strongly believe essential for positive results: Open Dialogue Open dialogue is key to meaningful communication and provides opportunities for frank discussions and a free exchange of ideas, leading to mutual respect and understanding. Participatory decision-making is a communication element crucial to good governance, which ensures transparency, accountability, equity, efficiency, and ultimately, sustainability. Informed consent is achieved through participatory decision-making and is a result of a consultation process that enables persons to voluntarily decide whether or not to formally participate and agree to conditions set within legal frameworks, based principally on full disclosure of relevant information. Social justice is a code that includes social, political, educational, legal, economic, and other human rights of people, and denotes that a person cannot be discriminated on the grounds of religion, sect, belief, gender, color, caste, wealth, or social status. Environmental integrity encompasses key factors in preserving the health of the environment - protecting ecosystems and biodiversity by consuming resources conservatively and efficiently, prioritizing the use of renewable resources, maximizing environmentally sound practices, and restoring degraded environments to the extent possible. Economic empowerment includes a wide array of interventions that serve to reduce poverty, including education and skills development, unemployment remedies, diversity initiatives, improved access to financing, and employment equity practices. Benefit sharing consists of a number of mechanisms that ensure all affected groups directly benefit from project-related revenues and/or profits. |
